Outstanding Saw!

I recently bought the Makita LS1016 to replace an older sliding miter saw. I'm 70 and have been a custom home builder for 40 years; I have extensive tool experience and a large tool inventory.Of all the saws I've owned and used, the LS 1016 is the stand-out best. Here's the key points;1. Being Makita, the build is high quality.2. This saw starts soooo smoothly. No bang, no torque jump or kick.3. Runs very quiet- no whine; you don't need ear protection. Brake stops blade smoothly too.4. Cuts- like velvet! Awesomely smooth and accurate.5. Comes with a 60 tooth blade that is better, at least on this saw, than any blade I ever had. Cut a piece of plywood and you have no splinters on either side, and the raw cut edge feels like you planed and fine-finish sanded it. I didn't think that was possible!6. Well designed controls and adjustments, excellent stops and locks. Very smooth.Now for the down side, which is the owners manual. Tiny illustrations are worthless, and descriptions/instructions are cryptic enough that you just skip it and go try things out hands-on. Fortunately figuring it all out doesn't take long.Overall- Very pleased with the saw, and given the quality, very pleased with the value.

It's no LS1013

As a technician who works at a prominent hardware store, I want to inform as many people as I can to steer away from this model.We have returned a lot of these to Makita since this model's inception. The main problem folks are having is with the fence. The lower fences bend easily, causing kick backs and bent blades.Another common problem with these is blade wobble. When you open a LS1013 motor, you will see the armature makes direct contact with the gear on the output shaft. When you disassemble a LS1016 there are a few gears between the armature gear and the output shaft. This leaves a lot of room for slop and failure.If I were purchasing a new saw, I would go with a different brand. Heck, I would suggest one from Harbor Freight Tools before recommending one of these!

A solid piece of equipment

The Makita Compound Miter Saw is a great pieceof equipment. It's detentes for various anglesare spot on. Something that is lacking in otherbrands:" I know because I've had a bad experiencewith a discount brand saw. The Makita also fit wellon the older Ridgid brand table that I was usingso it was not necessary to spend another $400for a new table.
